Merchant Center & Performance Max: The Complete Guide | VDM

Date

If you sell products, Google Merchant Center decides where they show up on Google. One product feed powers your Google Ads Performance Max campaigns, your free listings on the Shopping tab, and the “in stock nearby” products shown on your Google Business Profile and in Google Maps. Get the feed right once, and every one of those channels gets better at the same time.

This guide is for retailers on Vancouver Island and across BC: garden centres, florists, bike shops, boutiques, wine shops, hardware and flooring stores, and anyone with a Shopify or WooCommerce store. It walks through exactly how each piece connects, what to set up, and the mistakes we see most often when we take over accounts.

The short version:

  • Merchant Center holds your product data: titles, prices, photos, stock levels, and store locations.
  • Performance Max uses that data to build product ads that run across Google’s channels, including Shopping, Search, YouTube, Display and Maps.
  • Free listings use the same data to show your products on the Shopping tab, Google Images, Lens and more, at no cost per click.
  • Google Business Profile, once linked, lets your in-store products appear on your profile and in local searches, which supports your local SEO.

Want this set up properly the first time? Victoria Digital Marketing builds and manages Merchant Center feeds and Performance Max campaigns for local retailers. See our Google Ads management services or book a complimentary introductory call.

Part 1: What Google Merchant Center actually is

Merchant Center is the free Google account where your product catalogue lives. Google doesn’t crawl your store and guess what you sell. It reads the product data you send it, checks that data against your website and its policies, then decides where each product is allowed to appear.

Every account now runs on the newer Merchant Center interface (often called Merchant Center Next). It has a simpler dashboard, product diagnostics, and a single place to manage your feeds, shipping, returns and stores.

The product feed is the foundation

Your feed is a list of every product with its details. Google requires a set of core attributes for every item (source):

Attribute What it is Why it matters
ID Your unique product code (often the SKU) Ties sales, stock and reporting back to one product
Title The product name The biggest single factor in which searches you show for
Description A plain-language product summary Adds keyword context and helps AI-driven surfaces understand the item
Link The product page URL Must load fast and match the feed exactly
Image link The main product photo Your ad creative. Clean, well-lit photos win clicks
Price Current price with currency (CAD) Must match your site to the cent or the product gets disapproved
Availability In stock, out of stock, preorder, backorder Keeps you from paying for clicks on items you can’t sell
Brand, GTIN or MPN, condition Manufacturer identifiers Required for many products. GTINs (barcodes) help Google match you to the right searches

Apparel adds colour, size, age group and gender. Shipping settings and a return policy are also required for Canadian merchants (source).

How products get into Merchant Center

  1. E-commerce platform sync. Shopify’s Google & YouTube app and WooCommerce’s Google for WooCommerce plugin push your catalogue automatically. This is the easiest route for most small retailers. Need a store built for this? See our Shopify website design services.
  2. Automatic website crawl. Merchant Center can pull products from your site’s structured data. It’s quick, but you get less control over titles and attributes.
  3. Google Sheets or a scheduled file. Good for smaller catalogues or stores without an online shop.
  4. Local inventory feed. A second feed that tells Google which products are in stock at which physical store, and at what price. This is what unlocks local inventory ads and free local listings (more in Part 4).

Setup checklist

  • Create or claim your Merchant Center account and verify your website
  • Add your business details, shipping settings and return policy
  • Connect your product source (Shopify, WooCommerce, Sheets or a file)
  • Fix every issue flagged under Products > Needs attention
  • Link Google Ads, Google Analytics and your Google Business Profile under Settings > Apps and services (source)
  • Turn on free listings under Marketing > Marketing methods
  • If you have a storefront, add your stores and a local inventory feed

Part 2: How Merchant Center powers Performance Max

Performance Max (PMax) is Google’s all-in-one campaign type. When you link Merchant Center to Google Ads, PMax pulls your feed straight in and turns each product into an ad. Your feed is effectively your ad copy, your creative and your keyword list, all in one.

  1. You link Google Ads to Merchant Center. You can’t swap the Merchant Center account on a campaign later, so pick the right one (source).
  2. You create a PMax campaign, choose your Merchant Center account and, if you have several, a feed label or country.
  3. You pick a goal: Sales, Leads, Website traffic, or Local store visits and promotions.
  4. Google matches searches and audiences to products in your feed, using titles, descriptions, categories and price.
  5. Ads serve wherever Google predicts a sale: Shopping, Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps.

Listing groups vs. asset groups

These two terms trip up almost everyone, so here’s the plain-language version.

  • Listing groups decide which products a campaign or asset group can advertise. You can split by brand, category, product type, custom label or item ID. Every PMax retail campaign needs at least one (source).
  • Asset groups decide how you’re presented: headlines, descriptions, images, logos and video. Google recommends a different set of products per asset group so the messaging fits the product (source).

A garden centre might run one asset group for houseplants, one for patio furniture and one for seasonal decor, each with its own photos and headlines.

Feed-only PMax vs. full PMax

  Feed-only PMax Full PMax
What you supply Just the Merchant Center feed Feed plus headlines, images, logos and video
Where it shows Mostly Shopping and dynamic remarketing Shopping, Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, Maps
Reach Limited (source) Full reach across Google
Best for Testing, tight budgets, product-focused retailers Brands ready to scale and build awareness

Feed-only campaigns behave much like the old Standard Shopping campaigns. They’re a good starting point when budgets are small. Full PMax campaigns earn more reach, but they need strong creative to avoid wasting spend on low-quality placements.

How to make PMax work harder

  1. Write titles for searchers, not your stockroom. Lead with brand, product type and key attributes. “Trek FX 2 Hybrid Bike, Medium, Matte Black” beats “FX2-MD-BLK.”
  2. Use custom labels. Tag products by margin, best-sellers, seasonality or clearance, then split listing groups so your budget goes to the products that make money.
  3. Track real conversions. Purchases, revenue values, calls and store visits, not page views. PMax optimizes toward whatever you tell it matters (source).
  4. Feed it first-party data. Customer lists and website visitor audiences act as audience signals, showing Google who to look for.
  5. Exclude what you don’t want. Use brand exclusions and negative keywords where available, so PMax isn’t just collecting sales you’d have made anyway.
  6. Give it time. PMax needs a learning period. Making big changes every few days resets that learning.

Part 3: Free listings and the organic Shopping tab

This is the part most retailers miss. The same feed that powers your ads can put your products on Google for free, with no cost per click.

Where free listings show up

According to Google, eligible products can appear at no cost on (source):

  • Google Search, including product rich results and the Shopping Knowledge Panel
  • The Shopping tab
  • Google Images and Google Lens
  • YouTube
  • Google Maps
  • Gemini
  • The products section of your Google Business Profile

Free listings are on by default for new Merchant Center accounts. For older accounts, check under Marketing > Marketing methods. Turning them on gives Google permission to show your products, but it doesn’t guarantee they’ll appear (source).

Free listings vs. paid Shopping ads

  Free listings Paid (Performance Max)
Cost $0 per click Pay per click
Placement Organic spots on the Shopping tab and other surfaces Sponsored spots, usually above or beside organic results
Control Driven by feed quality and relevance Driven by budget, bids, goals and feed quality
Same feed? Yes Yes

They work together, not against each other. Paid ads win the top sponsored spots; free listings pick up extra organic visibility underneath. A well-optimized feed improves both.

How to rank better in free listings

There’s no bidding here, so feed quality and trust do all the work.

  1. Complete every attribute you can. GTINs, brand, product type, colour, size, material. More detail means more searches you can match.
  2. Write descriptive, keyword-rich titles. Think about how a local shopper would phrase it: “Hand-tied seasonal bouquet, large” rather than “Bouquet #4.”
  3. Use multiple high-quality images. Add lifestyle photos as additional images alongside a clean main shot.
  4. Show your return policy and shipping. Google displays return info next to your products, and shoppers notice it (source).
  5. Keep prices and stock perfectly in sync. A mismatch between your feed and your website is one of the fastest ways to get disapproved.
  6. Add product structured data to your website. Schema markup for Product, Offer and reviews reinforces what your feed says and supports rich results in regular search. Our SEO services include this setup.
  7. Collect product and seller reviews. Star ratings make listings stand out and build trust before the click.

Google now pulls product data into Gemini and AI-powered search results (source). When someone asks an AI assistant “where can I buy a hybrid bike in Victoria,” clean, detailed product data gives you a better chance of being part of that answer. Your Merchant Center feed is now part of your AI search strategy too.

Part 4: Merchant Center + Google Business Profile for local SEO

If you have a physical store, linking Merchant Center to your Google Business Profile (GBP) is where things get powerful. It connects your product catalogue to your location, so Google can show shoppers nearby that you have the exact item they’re searching for, in stock, today.

What linking GBP unlocks

When you link your Business Profile in Merchant Center, you can (source):

  • Show your local, in-store products in ads and free listings
  • Manage your store information from Merchant Center
  • Add multiple store locations to one account

With a local inventory feed in place, you also get free local listings. These show nearby shoppers which products are in stock at a specific store, and appear on Google Search, Google Maps, the Shopping tab and your Business Profile through the “See what’s in store” section (source). Listings can show store hours, directions, phone number, price, availability and approximate distance (source).

Google reports that retailers showing local inventory get about 16% more impressions on their organic shopping offers (source).

Why this helps your local SEO

Your Business Profile ranks for searches about your business type, like “florist Victoria.” Product data helps it rank for searches about things you sell, like “peonies near me” or “e-bike battery Langford.”

  • More search terms. Each product gives Google another reason to show your profile. Local SEO specialists note that synced Merchant Center products are what help a profile rank for product searches, while products added manually in GBP mainly help with conversions (source).
  • More reasons to click. A profile that shows real products, prices and stock is far more convincing than one with just hours and photos.
  • Stronger relevance signals. Product categories, consistent business information and real-time inventory reinforce what your business is and who it serves.

Product listings are one piece of local SEO, not a replacement for it. Reviews, categories, posts, photos, citations and a well-optimized website still do the heavy lifting. Learn more about our local SEO services.

Local inventory ads (the paid side)

Local inventory ads are the paid version: Shopping ads that highlight that a product is available at your nearby store. Performance Max for retail can include local products by default when you have local inventory, and you can filter them with listing groups (source).

What changed in 2026: as of August 31, 2026, local inventory ads are on by default for Standard Shopping campaigns linked to a Merchant Center account with local inventory. The old “Local products” on/off setting is gone. To keep a campaign online-only, you now use the inventory filter (channel = online) (source). If you split budgets between online and in-store sales, check your campaigns.

Requirements for local listings and ads

  • A physical store where customers can see and buy products, in the country you’re targeting (source)
  • A verified Google Business Profile for each location
  • The correct Business Profile linked to Merchant Center, with the right stores selected
  • A local inventory feed with accurate stock and price per store, kept up to date
  • Free local listings turned on in Merchant Center

Part 5: How it all fits together

One feed, four places to win. Fix a title in Merchant Center and it improves your paid ads, your free listings, your local listings and your Business Profile at the same time. Let a price go out of sync and all four suffer at once.

Your product and local inventory feeds flow into Merchant Center, your linked Business Profile supplies the store locations, and Merchant Center sends approved products out to every placement.

Measuring what’s working

Where to look What it tells you
Merchant Center > Performance Clicks and impressions from free listings, separate from ads
Merchant Center > Products > Needs attention Disapprovals and warnings that are costing you visibility
Google Ads > Campaigns > Products Sales, revenue and return on ad spend by product
Google Business Profile > Performance Calls, directions and website clicks from your profile
Google Analytics 4 Revenue and behaviour by channel, including organic shopping

Check Merchant Center diagnostics weekly. Review ad performance by product monthly, and move budget toward your profitable products.

The 10 most common mistakes we fix

  1. Price or stock mismatches between the feed and the website, causing disapprovals.
  2. Lazy product titles copied from an internal inventory system.
  3. Missing GTINs or brand, which limits the searches you can match.
  4. No shipping or return policy set up in Merchant Center.
  5. One giant listing group that lets PMax spend everything on a handful of low-margin products.
  6. Tracking page views as conversions, so Google optimizes for the wrong thing.
  7. Free listings switched off on older accounts.
  8. The wrong Business Profile linked, or stores not selected, blocking local listings (source).
  9. Stale local inventory, showing products as in stock when the shelf is empty.
  10. Ignoring the August 2026 local inventory change, so online-only campaigns start showing store products.

Recognize a few of these? Most can be fixed in days, not months. Our team handles the feed, the campaigns and the Business Profile together. See our Google Ads management services or book a complimentary introductory call.

Success stories from local retailers

Lifestyle Markets: from 10,000+ disapprovals to 50%+ more organic shopping sales

The challenge: Lifestyle Markets, a natural health and grocery retailer in Victoria, had more than 10,000 products disapproved in Merchant Center. Health products face Google’s healthcare advertising policies, and Health Canada regulations keep changing, so a product approved one month can be flagged the next.

What we did:

  • Monitor and maintain disapproved products on an ongoing basis, so fixable items get back in front of shoppers quickly
  • Optimize the feed to improve the store’s presence in organic Shopping listings
  • Build custom Performance Max asset groups focused on online sales

The result: Organic shopping sales increased by more than 50%.

Rock Your Nose: staying competitive through tariff changes

The challenge: Shifting tariffs put pressure on pricing and product availability, putting Canadian sales at risk.

What we did:

  • Adjusted the feed and campaigns as tariff conditions changed
  • Kept product availability accurate in Merchant Center so products stayed eligible to show
  • Focused visibility on Canadian shoppers

The result: Increased Canadian sales.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Merchant Center free?

Yes. Merchant Center and free listings cost nothing. You only pay when you run ads, such as Performance Max, through Google Ads.

Do I need a Shopify or WooCommerce store to use Merchant Center?

No. You can upload products with Google Sheets or a file. To appear in free local listings, you need a physical store and a local inventory feed (source). Online checkout makes it far easier to track sales from ads, though.

Can a service business use Merchant Center?

Merchant Center is built for physical products. Service businesses like trades, clinics and consultants usually get more from Google Ads Search campaigns, Local Services Ads and a well-optimized Business Profile. See our Google Ads management services.

Will free listings replace my paid ads?

Rarely. Paid ads hold the top sponsored spots, and free listings add organic visibility below them. Most retailers get the best results running both from one strong feed.

Does linking Merchant Center to my Business Profile help my Map Pack rankings?

It helps your profile show up for product searches and gives shoppers more reasons to choose you. Your core local rankings still depend on relevance, distance and prominence, which come from reviews, categories, your website and citations.

Why were my products disapproved?

The most common causes are price or availability mismatches, missing shipping or return settings, missing identifiers like GTIN, and landing pages that don’t match the feed. Check Products > Needs attention in Merchant Center for the exact reason on each item.

How long until Performance Max shows results?

Expect a learning period of a few weeks. Results depend on budget, conversion tracking and feed quality. Avoid big changes during that window.

What changed with local inventory ads in 2026?

From August 31, 2026, Standard Shopping campaigns show local inventory by default when local inventory is available. To keep a campaign online-only, set the inventory filter to the online channel (source).
